Rio de Janeiro has much in the way of shopping, from colorful markets straight out of the North-est to chic Zona sul boutiques. Some of the major strips in the city for window shoping and browsing include the following:
Leblon - Avenida Ataulfo de paiva : Boutiques selling haute couture sprinkled among cafes, bookshops and restaurants.
Lapa - Rua do Lavradio : Rows of antique stores, mixed with hypermodern furniture shops, along with a few cafes and bars - sometimes inside the stores.
Ipanema - Rua Visconde de Piraja : Ipanemas vibrant shopping strip has boutiques, shopping centers and scores of dining and coffee - sipping options.
Centro - Rua Senador Passos : One of the main streets coursing through the Middle Eastern bazaarlike Saara, with clothing and curio shops spilling onto the street.
Copacabana - Av. Nossa Senhora de Copacabana : Packed during the week, this strip is lined with shops selling everything from (chocolates to soccer balls). There are plenty of street vendors hawking their along the sidewalks.

La Vereda - Rua Almirante Alexandrino 428, Santa Teresa. A colorful selection of Brazilian handicrafts as well as work from local artists and artisans is featured here. You can buy pottery, furniture, paintings, handmade dolls and old prints highlighting historic Santa Teresa.
Trilhos Urbanos - Rua Almirante Alexandrino 402A, Santa Teresa. (is closed on Mondays). Trilhos Urbanos has a small but interesting assortment of handicrafts. Works by local artists and artisans are also for sale - photographs, picture frames, paintings and work in metal.
Emporio Brasil - Rua Visconde de Piraja 598, Ipanema. (closed on Sundays). Hidden in the back of small shopping center, Emprio Brasil sells some of Rios loveliest objets of art. Works here showcase the talents and fibers of the country - Jewelry, vases, instruments, baskets and an ever - changing array of works produced by Brazilian artists and artisans.
Ars Brasilis - Rua Souza Lima 37, Copacabana. Colorful handicrafts from Minas Gerais and the Northest are for sale here. The friendly shopkeepers also cook up small, tasty plates of cuisine from Minas Gerais.
O Sol - Rua Corcovado 213, Jardim Botanico. (closed on Sundays). Run by a nonprofit organisation, this delightful store displays the works of regional artists and sells baskets, woven rugs and Brazilian folk art in clay, wood and porcelain.
No Meio do Caminho - Avenida General San Martin 1247, Leblon. (closed on Sundays). Showcasing the work of talented Brazilian artisans, No Meio do Caminho has two floors full of pottery, vases, ceramics and wood and wood-work. Decorative items here are more akin to art pieces and priced accordingly. No meio do Caminho will ship goods anywhere.

Rios best market is found at the weekend (Feira Nordestina) in Sao Cristovao. There are also some other lively markets.
Babilonia Feira Hype - Rua Jardim Botanico 971, Jardim Botanico. (2 to 10 pm on Saturdays and Sundays) A younger crowed mills through the many clothing, sunglasses and jewelry stalls here on weekends. Often live bands and dance performances are staged here; you can also get your fortune read by misticos (fortune tellers) or receive a henna tattoo. Plenty of food stalls (mostly of the fried sausages and beer variety) litter the fairgrounds.
Hippie Fair - (Feira de Arte de Ipanema.) Praça General Osorio, Ipanema (9am to 5 pm on Sundays). The Zona suls big market, the Hippie Fair has lots of artwork, jewelry, handicrafts, leather goods and even furniture for sale. A stall in the southeast corner of the plaza sells tasty Northeastern cuisine.
Feira do Rio Antigo - (Rio antiques Fair) Rua do lavradio, centro. (10am to 6pm 1st Saturday of the month). Although the Rio Antiques Fair happens just once a month, dont miss it if you are in town. The colonial buildings become a living installation as the whole street fills with antiques and music - samba and MPB bands ( MPB means - Brazilian Popular Music) creating a fine ambience.

Rio has quite a few large shoppings (malls). Most keep hours from 10am to 10pm Monday through Saturday. Some open on Sunday as well (3pm to 10pm, typically). The most centrally located mall is Rio Sul. (Rua lauro Muller 116, Botafogo). For name-brand stores at discounted prices, dont miss Rio Off Price (Rua General Severiano 97, Botafogo). The Botafogo Praia Shopping (Praia de Botafogo 400, Botafogo) is also quite popular. For the most upscale boutiques, visit the small Sao Conrado Fashion mall (Estrada da gavea 899, Sao Conrado). Finally the kingdom of shopping malls and the biggest shopping mall of America is The Barra Shopping (Avenida das Americas 4666, barra da Tijuca), which has 550 stores, 43 restaurants, five movie screens, bowling, Hard Rock Caffee, Medical center, a very big games room called (Playlandia), The New York City Center expansion and many more . . . So come and see it !!!!
